Frequently Asked Questions*

What is the difference between a Notary Public and a Commissioner for Oaths?

In Saskatchewan, a Notary Public has all the powers of a Commissioner for Oaths, plus more. While a Commissioner can only witness signatures for use within the province, a Notary Public can certify true copies of documents and witness paperwork for use across Canada and internationally.

Can you provide legal advice or explain my document?

No. As a Notary Public, my role is to act as an impartial witness to the signing of documents and verify your identity. I am not a lawyer and cannot provide legal opinions or advice on the contents of your paperwork. If you have questions about what you are signing, please consult a legal professional before our appointment.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, appointments are required to ensure prompt service. I offer flexible scheduling, including mobile and virtual options, to fit your needs.

The Notarization Process:

Why shouldn’t I sign my document before the meeting?

A Notary’s job is to witness you signing the document in real-time. If you sign beforehand, I cannot legally verify that you were the one who signed it. We will complete the signature portion together during our session.

Can you notarize a document that has blank spaces?

No. To prevent fraud, I cannot notarize a document that is incomplete. Please ensure all fields (except the signature and date) are filled out before we meet.

What if my document is in a language other than English?

I can notarize documents in other languages provided you understand the content and can explain the purpose of the document to me. However, please note that any notarial certificate I attach will be written in English.
International Use & Authentication

What is an Apostille?

As of 2024, Canada has joined the Hague Apostille Convention. This means that for many international documents, you no longer need “legalization” from an embassy. Instead, once I notarize your document, it is sent to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice to receive an Apostille certificate.

Can you notarize documents for use outside of Saskatchewan?

Yes. A Saskatchewan Notary Public’s seal is recognized across Canada and globally.
